Gardens4Africa
It is possible for every garden, small or large, to be beautiful with balance and harmony. Unfortunately with limited time and knowledge gardens not-totally-satisfactory often remain just that. Best results are achieved when thoughts and ideas are put to paper first, thus saving money, effort and headaches later. This site offers basic techniques for simple, yet effective, designs and the additional option of getting one done for you.

Hadeco
Hadeco means bulbs in any gardener’s vocabulary. Their site will tell you a bit about the company’s history, you can check out their farms, find out more about the types of bulbs and how to care for them, there are guidelines on planting, FAQs, a flowering schedule, and information on cut flowers. (They will even tell you how to select cut flowers so that they last.) There is a photo gallery, as well as articles to read. Why not order bulbs and other goodies online? It’s all there for you.

National Gardening
This Web site belongs to the nonprofit, National Gardening Association, and the organisation has two goals: helping gardeners and helping people through gardening. There is a Q&A library, an article library, how-to projects, and a dictionary of gardening terms. Sections are divided into: ‘flowers and bulbs’, ‘fruit, veggies and herbs’, ‘home and hearth’, ‘lawns and landscaping’, and ‘garden care and pests’. The site is beautifully put together in gentle colours and simple to navigate. And for those of you who are new at this, look at some of the simpler sections, like ‘growing flowers 101’.

Garden World
Garden World is the online site for a garden centre that provides more than just a gardening service. Their children’s playground and animal farm will keep the little ones quiet, plus there is a country tea garden when you want to put your feet up. Find out about their Sunday Craft market and their Sunday art exhibitions. (Believe it or not, it is also used as a wedding and function venue!) However, you can find this all out on the site. The site is a little ‘clumsy’ and could smarten up in terms of design.

The Spirit of Gardening
This Web site doesn’t seem to believe in a navigating system – which is kind of unique in itself. It is really a list that just keeps on going down, with a number of links that you have to search for. However there is fun to be had once your search is over. Read the quotes for gardeners, check out the history of gardening, laugh at the jokes and humour, be inspired by Haiku poetry, spirituality and Zen poetry, and discover a world of gardening writing on the Net.

Garden Concepts
Garden Concepts is a company that creates Koi ponds, water features and landscapes. You will find Koi tips and information on the different kinds of ponds, water features and landscaping, including pictures. (There are also comprehensive specifications to wonder at.) The site is quite basic in design but does serve its purpose, and the pictures are clear and don’t take ages to download. It could do with a bit more content to make it interactive.

Kidsgardening.com
Want to get your little one interested in gardening? Clicking on this site would be a great way forward. Their mission is to: “provide horticultural expertise, quality resources, meaningful networking opportunities, and ideas and activities that spark inquisitiveness and exploration to help educators and parents.” There is info for parents, teaching aids for… errr… teachers, classroom stories, a greenhouse guide, information all about plants, a Q&A library, and kid’s gardening discussions. The site is nicely put together and is fun to use.

Dirk Meyer
Dirk Meyer is a garden design consultant. His site, rather than being just brochureware, provides good information on South African gardening. You will find plant information - understanding plant types, how to take cuttings, and problems with plants. There is also information on design, such as what to plant depending on the sunlight available. Take a look at the bug section, where you will find ways of dealing with the little buggers. As per any good Web site, you will find a list of links. You should also take a look at his gallery of gardens for ideas.

GardenBrew
This site looks at environmentally sound gardening solutions. There is a newsletter as well as articles to be read. Topics cover the range – from parsley and planting a memory tree to the value of landscaping your garden. The list of links include other bio-friendly sites and information on insects. This appears to be an amateur’s site but it is really well put together and there are no in-your-face ads. (The website is part of the WebSeed content Network.)

Gardens of Africa
This gardening site provides you with a gardening dictionary and a link to find out about the South African weather forecast. There is more on events and gardening news (although this is not very populated). Check out their tip of the day and take a look at the Web directory that lists a few gardening services. The site design is sweet (in keeping with the theme) and it is very simple to navigate.
