This is the national optical observatory of South Africa and is administered by the National Research Foundation (NRF). Its main headquarters are in Observatory, Cape Town, but the large telescopes used for research are at the observing station near Sutherland in the Northern Cape. The SAAO encourages public visits to both these sites. The Royal Observatory was founded at the Cape of Good Hope in 1820 and in the 1970s, this and the Republic Observatory, Johannesburg and the Radcliffe Observatory, Pretoria merged to form the South African Astronomical Observatory. European Space Agency
Since 1975 ESA has provided a vision of Europe’s future in space and of the benefits for people on the ground that satellites can supply. It has developed strategies needed to fulfill the vision, through collaborative projects in space science and technology, developing powerful launchers and novel spacecraft, and creative interaction with European national space agencies and aerospace industries. Europe’s space industries employ 40 000 people directly and 250,000 indirectly, and these numbers can only grow. Its Web site is extremely user-friendly and packed full of interesting and useful content. |
